16,000 cardboard beds were removed from the olympic Village for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris to be reused. According to the Games’ President, Tony Estanguet, the move is part of Paris 2024’s double vision.

The sustainability of the games…the duty of the Games, we attempted to conceive how much we can guarantee and provide a second life for all the equipment utilized for Paris 2024.

Cardboard beds were adopted for the first time at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Airweave, a Japanese mattress business, was the official bedding backer, and they sent these cardboard beds to Paris.

We built these cardboard beds to sustain up to three or four people jumping, because winning a medal makes people happy,” said Motokuni Takaoka, Airweave’s founder and president.

“So, we will donate to a diverse (group) of organizations in France,” explained Chie Fujii, Logistics Manager of the Airweave Paris 2024 Project.  This makes it easier to facilitate the second life.
