In the quarterfinals of the women’s singles competition at the Denmark Open 2024 badminton in Odense on Friday, India’s PV Sindhu fought valiantly but ultimately fell short against Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, the bronze medallist from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

India’s participation in the BWF Super 750 event was also terminated by the defeat.

PV Sindhu, ranked 18th in the world badminton rankings, lost to her Indonesian opponent, ranked 8th in the world, 13-21, 21-16, 9-21 in 57 minutes.

With her accurate cross-court placements, Tunjung placed Sindhu under pressure early on. The Indonesian shuttler extended her lead to win the opening game, leading 11–7 at the half.

After the change of ends, Sindhu came out firing and jumped out to a 6-1 lead right away. Despite Tunjung’s eight-point run in response, Sindhu rallied to take a one-point lead at the half.

Playing with a strap on her right leg, Tunjung found it difficult to keep up with Sindhu’s reach and speed as the Indian shuttler controlled the second half of the match to force a final.

But the third game ended up being a one-sided contest. The Indian badminton star finally lost steam and ended her challenge as Tunjung continuously worried Sindhu with excellent returns.

In 13 encounters, Sindhu had lost three times to Tunjung. Last year was the last time Sindhu had lost to Tunjung.

Sindhu, who won the Singapore Open in July 2022, is still vying for her first BWF World Tour championship after making it to the final of the Malaysia Masters BWF Super 500 competition in May.

The final Indian challenge at the Denmark Open was Sindhu, who on Wednesday upset Han Yue, the seventh-ranked player in the world, of the People’s Republic of China, in the second round.

Lakshya Sen, Malvika Bansod, and Unnati Hooda were among the other members of the Indian team who were eliminated in the first round.
