Slams
Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has expressed her displeasure with how she and other wrestlers are portrayed in the media.
According to Malik, the media has sensationalized stories that disparage the sportsmen rather than concentrating on important topics like the suspected wrongdoing of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.Slams
Criticism of Media Coverage
Malik expressed her displeasure with the way the media reported her previous engagements on Tuesday on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
She claimed that although the media attention concentrated on disparaging wrestlers and overlooked the more important problems, her goal was to impart lessons from her new book.
In my opinion, women’s issues should be promoted through the media, which serves as an amplifier in democracies. However, since this morning, I have been monitoring the news. There are headlines disparaging us wrestlers and no women’s issues. In her tweet, Malik said that neither the struggle of female wrestlers nor Brij Bhushan’s bad deeds were mentioned in the news.
Pay Attention to Women’s Issues Absent.Slams
Malik was disappointed by the media’s failure to draw attention to the difficulties and hardships that female wrestlers experience, especially in light of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s alleged sexual harassment.
She underlined that women’s views should be amplified by the media, especially when it comes to issues of equality and justice.
In addition to reporting my statements out of context, news outlets are also paraphrasing my book and publishing stuff I haven’t written in it.
We frequently act as though we are ravenous for spices, regardless of the harm they may be doing to a worthwhile cause. Don’t fabricate a story against female wrestlers by manipulating the facts.
It appears that stillness is preferable to the amplification these days. To what extent is it acceptable to transform a delicate matter into a conspiracy theory? Malik went on to say.
Claims Against Sharan Singh, Brij Bhushan
Sakshi Malik has discussed a number of problematic periods in her wrestling career in her recently published memoir, Witness.
Her description of an incident that happened during the 2012 Asian Junior Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan, is among the most startling disclosures.
Malik claims that former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh tried to harass her sexually in his hotel room during this event.
With multiple other female wrestlers speaking out against Singh, this accusation is a part of a broader story that has just lately surfaced.
In spite of these grave charges, Malik was angry that Singh’s alleged transgressions have not received much attention from the media.
Conflict Between Athletes
Malik’s fellow wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, have been embroiled in yet another scandal, which has further complicated matters.
Malik implied in her book that their actions undermined the protest campaign against Singh by accepting exemptions from the Asian Games trials last year.
However, Vinesh Phogat disagreed with this interpretation. That is what she believes. That is not what I agree with. The fight cannot be weak unless I am. This is what I think.
“The fight cannot be weak as long as Sakshi, Vinesh, and Bajrang are alive,” Phogat told PTI Video. She also underlined that wrestlers must maintain their fortitude and resolve both on and off the field.
They ought to always decide to engage in combat on the field. You will need to overcome the challenges and be tough for that. And we’re prepared to fight,” Phogat continued.
