The Chillicothe girls tennis team traveled to Excelsior Springs High School to play in the district semifinals on a chilly and windy Tuesday night.
The evening proceeded according to the standard 6-3 format, with six singles matches after three doubles matches.
When a team wins a majority of the games, the game is immediately ended without allowing the other games to finish, just like in all postseason playTennis
Excelsior’s top pair had just qualified for individual state, so Chillicothe knew they were in for a tough battle in the
#1 doubles. Despite their best efforts, seniors Micah Crowe and Keonnia Morgan were unable to defeat the formidable opponents.
The same was true in the #2 doubles match, where an Excelsior duo with incredibly powerful spin serves swiftly defeated Jasmine McLean and Lydia Bonderer despite their best efforts.
Nevertheless, Chillicothe’s first team victory of the evening came from Summer Gatson and Lexy Smith, who were able to gel as first-time partners and dominate their set. As a team, the Lady Hornets lost 1-2 going into singles play.

Every girl played best two out of three sets as all six singles bouts started simultaneously.
Three other teammates were down a set on their courts after seniors Sarah George and Bianca Clark failed to win on their courts after roughly forty-five minutes of perseverance and tenacity. This dropped the team’s score to 1-4.
The remaining courts all made a heroic comeback attempt, but it appeared that the night was almost gone.
The team scored 2-4 as sophomore Jasmine McLean completed a close struggle to secure another Chillicothe victory as the remaining seniors rallied from their deficits.
Keeley Shira, who was on the court next to her, won four straight games to force a second set tiebreak, but she was still one game away from losing her match.
Her match went into a third set when she narrowly prevailed in a set tiebreak. Third sets are never played in Missouri girls tennis; instead, players are required to play a 10-point championship tiebreak right away, which is equivalent to the third set.

One player for singles Crowe was only one game away from tying her opponent and was dominated in her second set. On the other court, though, Morgan was engaged in a fierce struggle to prolong the evening for herself and her colleagues, but she lost just before Shira or Crowe could complete.
Due to this, the game was called with an overall score of 2–5, but the three coaches from both teams who were present stated that if they could have completed every match, the night might have been 4-5.
The effort and comebacks displayed by the majority of the team on Tuesday night’s courts truly spoke volumes, even though the score may not appear to be close.
As a team, the Lady Hornets concluded their season 8-11. The following were the outcomes of the matches on Tuesday:
#1 Doubles Malaya Tedesco and Shelby Stodden defeated Crowe and Morgan. 4–8
#2 Doubles Laney Smith and Megan Riegel defeated McLean and Bonderer. 4–8
#3 Doubles Ananya Carrel and Lily Long were defeated 8–2 by Gatson and Smith.
Crowe and Stodden, the #1 singles, were left unfinished.
#2 Individuals Tedesco defeated Morgan 2-6, 4-6.
#3 Individuals Smith defeated Clark 2-6, 2-6.
#4 Shira and Riegel’s singles were left unfinished.
#5 Individuals Carrel lost to McLean 6-2, 6-3.
#6: Individuals Long defeated George 2-6, 4-6.
