vice president Rajeev Shukla defended Kanpur as a Test center on Monday, saying the venue cannot be denied the opportunity to stage long format matches because it is undergoing infrastructure upgrades. Persistent rain has wreaked havoc on India’s second Test against Bangladesh at Green Park,
wiping out two full days of play without a single ball being delivered. The stadium’s drainage system is obsolete, and three super soppers were employed to dry the ground after a rainstorm. On Sunday, it didn’t rain much, and the sun came out briefly, but the damp outfield prevented play from beginning. There could only be 35 overs.
We are used to receiving criticism as administrators of the BCCI in cricket. However, everything is being criticized. When we refused to play Kanpur, I was chastised as well. Shukla stated, “Now we are giving the match, and I am being criticized… why it has been given to Kanpur.”
He stated that they have no control over the weather and that no match has ever been abandoned at this center. If you recall, it used to be a permanent Test Center. So the whole objective was to host Test matches here.
This is the first time in 80 years that we have been unable to stage a match for two days due to heavy rain. However, history reveals that no matches have been abandoned here. Many venues across the world have had to cancel matches due to rain.
“I don’t think there should be a fuss because when this field and stadium were being created, those technologies were not available. Now, technologies are available.bcci

“Just like in our Lucknow stadium, we have that technology. In Varanasi, we are building another stadium. We have high-tech, advanced technology to remove the water. Here, too, we are planning.” Back in 2019, top batsman Virat Kohlihad advocated that Test cricket be played solely at five big venues. Top cricketing nations, such as Australia and England, have permanent centres.
When asked if he supports the proposal, he replied, “Yes.” Shukla stated that India has five major centers in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kanpur.
Kanpur was also one of them. So it’s a permanent Test Center. Then we must consider other issues. The second is our rotation policy. So we have to follow the rotation policy.bcci
“And three, India now has a large number of venues. We have the most venues, which Australia and other countries do not have. And we must provide chance to all of them.” Shukla stated that smaller centers with infrastructure should host tests to retain

“The number of fans in those cities is decreasing since people are accustomed to watching T20 and one-day cricket. So, that’s why, you know, the suggestion was floated that we should organize Test matches in B-grade cities with infrastructure.
Look at this, it’s almost full. And, despite the rains over the prior two days, a large crowd gathered to watch the action. This indicates that there is an appetite. People are excited to watch cricket. So that’s why we’re keeping everything in mind.”
“We are considering both alternatives. It could also be located abroad. Last time we were in Dubai. And that went pretty well. The overall goal is to expand cricket into other countries. As a result, international cricket fans are drawn in as well.
“They link themselves with cricket. So, that is the core notion. If we can’t play matches there, we should at least hold similar events there. Keeping this in mind, all possibilities remain open.bcci
